Badges Making a Return? Or have I been detached from its development?

I have been getting a lot of good e-mails lately, one of which is the one I got today:

I remembered this matter was mentioned by the Secretariat during the conference. These badges are welcomed. I have had badges in the past from R and Python programming in Datacamp, as well as from Treehouse for other programming skills. They do look appealing on one’s resume but until the time comes when badges are regarded as on a par with certifications, what they are for now are aesthetic buffers to one’s list of skills, much like Nanodegrees that were at one time a trendy and hip approach to CPD.

I’ve just registered for OpenBadge to actually get to see how the badges look like. They aren’t half bad and I hope the badges system gets standardised and uniform in the future. Who knows, maybe one day degrees and diplomas are accompanied by augmented reality codes that come with virtual badges.
